Furry Lewis

Furry Lewis was an American country blues singer and guitarist. He was born on 6 March 1893 (or 1899) in Greenwood, Mississippi, USA and passed away on 14 September 1981 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA.

Despite losing a leg, Lewis began recording on the Vocalion label in 1927. He was known for his performances around the Memphis music scene, including at Pee Wee Saloon near his home on Beale Street. During his career as a street-sweeper until his retirement in 1966.

In 1972, Lewis joined the renowned Memphis Blues Caravan alongside other notable artists such as *Blind Boy Fuller*, *Bo Carter*, and *Charley Patton*. He even had the opportunity to open for *The Rolling Stones* twice and gained recognition with a profile in Playboy magazine. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 82 due to heart failure after contracting pneumonia. Furry Lewis is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, South Memphis.
