Harry Partch

Harry Partch (1901-1974) was a pioneering composer from Oakland, California. He is known for his innovative work with microtonal scales and his invention of unique instruments to perform his compositions.

Partch was one of the first composers in the Western world to systematically explore microtonality, which involves dividing the traditional 12-note scale into smaller intervals. His groundbreaking approach challenged conventional musical norms and expanded the possibilities of sound.

In addition to his musical innovations, Partch also gained recognition for designing and constructing his own instruments. These instruments were specifically designed to accommodate his microtonal compositions and included creations such as the "cloud chamber bowls" and the "chromelodeon." By building these instruments himself, Partch ensured that he had complete control over their capabilities and sound.
