Melody Gardot

Melody Gardot is a jazz artist from New Jersey, USA. She was born on February 2nd, 1985 and currently resides in Philadelphia. In 2003, she experienced a life-changing accident when she was run over by a car while riding her bicycle. This left her disabled and hospitalized for over a year, during which she had to re-learn basic skills like speaking and walking. Melody also developed an extreme sensitivity to sound and light, leading her to wear dark sunglasses throughout the day and use a cane for mobility.

Despite these challenges, music became Melody's main therapy during her recovery process. Starting with piano lessons at the age of nine, she trained herself to sing by humming into a tape recorder due to neural-pathway damages caused by the accident. While still in the hospital, Melody also learned how to play the guitar.

As she began writing songs, Melody made them available on iTunes and started performing them at various venues in Philadelphia. Her talent caught the attention of radio station WXPN, known for launching Norah Jones' career. Encouraged by WXPN, Melody recorded a demo that soon sparked interest from Universal Records. In 2006, she released her first album "Worrisome Heart," which gained even more recognition when it was re-released on Verve Records in 2008.
