Born on July 27, 1992, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to a Barbadian father and Curaçaoan mother, Lanez's family moved frequently throughout the United States due to his father's work as an ordained minister. After tragically losing his mother to a rare disease during childhood, Lanez developed a passion for rap music. In Jamaica Queens at age 15 due to behavioral issues he was sent to live with his older brother before returning to Toronto where he lived independently from the age of 15 onwards.

Lanez adopted the nickname Notorious before becoming known as Tory Lanez. Dropping out of school at age 16, he began performing songs at outdoor concerts and discovered an interest in singing without any formal training. Inspired by artists like Brandy and R.Kelly growing up, Lanez continues to make waves in the music industry under various aliases including Argentina Fargo
