23 Skidoo

23 Skidoo are a British band known for their fusion of industrial, post-punk, alternative dance, rock, and world music. Formed in 1979 by Fritz Catlin, Johnny Turnbull and Sam Mills, the group drew inspiration from martial arts, Burundi and Kodo drumming, Fela Kuti, The Last Poets, William S. Burroughs and the emerging confluence of industrial, post-punk and funk.

Their debut album "Seven Songs" released in 1982 is said to evoke the claustrophobic humidity of an African forest. With influences ranging from A Certain Ratio to Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire, they created experimental EPs like "Tearing Up The Plans." In 1983 they performed live at the first WOMAD Festival with their album "The Culling Is Coming."

In later years they shifted towards hip hop and signed to Virgin Records in 1991. Their self-titled LP featured collaborations with Pharoah Sanders and Roots Manuva. They released a compilation of singles titled "The Gospel Comes To New Guinea" in 2002 before liquidating their company in 2003.
