Comets on Fire is an American noise rock band from Santa Cruz, California. Formed in 1999, the band consists of *Ethan Miller* (guitar/vocals), *Noel von Harmonson* (echoplex), *Ben Flashman* (bass), *Ben Chasny* (guitar) and *Utrillo Kushner* (drums). They are known for their psychedelic rock sound, drawing inspiration from influential groups like Hawkwind and Butthole Surfers. Comets on Fire's music defies categorization, resulting in a unique and captivating musical experience.

Short for "Subterranean Pop" 

The label was an outgrowth of [a=Bruce Pavitt]'s Olympia, WA based (print) fanzine, which became the well respected cassettezine of the same name. 

After his move to Seattle he ran a music column in the Seattle Rocket also called Sub Pop.

After initial forays into the record label world with a [a=Green River] 7" (not officially on Sub Pop) and the Sub Pop 100 LP, the label exploded onto the indie scene with four influential colored vinyl 7"s which included [a=Mudhoney]'s "Touch Me I'm Sick" which made the year-end top 10 playlist of nearly every music journalist in the world.

Subsequent hyping of the label in the English music press put them on the map, and grunge was born.

After 2004's critically acclaimed 'Blue Cathedral', one might have expected Comets on Fire to blast off into the cosmos in an infinite flurry of lysergic spasmodicism. Surprising, then, that they should turn in an earthy, more accessible and downright beautiful album as their follow-up. Then again, it is a completely logical progression, but in reverse, sort of. On 'Avatar' their astonishing new album, Comets display development in every direction: as musicians, as songwriters, as arrangers and as singers (?!), without sacrificing one ounce of the intensity that is expected from our heroes. As on 'Blue Cathedral', the diversity of the material is staggering. 'Avatar' veers from swinging, bluesy explorations to piano-laced, progressive power balladry, to pure tribalism, evoking everyone from the Allmans, to Quicksilver, to Procol Harum, to some insane Fela / Sun Ra / Crazy Horse hybrid, yet remains wholly Comets on Fire.
