American indie/folk singer/songwriter and guitarist. His solo career began during the mid-1990s, releasing lo-fi folk based recordings on his own cassette-only label, [l188419] Gaining a local cult following in Seattle, he was brought to the attention of Sub Pop Records by Sunny Day Real Estate singer [a=Jeremy Enigk].

His musical career is marked by periods of close collaboration with various musicians. Until about "I break chairs" his work was closely linked to [a=Pedro The Lion] and [a=David Bazan]. From then until "Caught In The Trees", [a=Eric Fischer] became his companion as a musician and producer. The most significant change in sound came when he met  the late [a=Richard Swift (2)], with whom he collaborated from "St. Bartlett" to "Visions Of Us On The Land."Since "The Horizon Just Laughed" [a=Josh Gordon] has been his new musical partner.

Other frequent contributors were the members of [a=Gathered In Song], [a=Rosie Thomas] and [a387255].

His full-length albums have been released on [l77343], [l35538], [l44370] and [l363414]. In 2021 he founded [l=Maraqopa Records]. From 2004 to 2007 he also co-ran  [l77015].

Short for "Subterranean Pop" 

The label was an outgrowth of [a=Bruce Pavitt]'s Olympia, WA based (print) fanzine, which became the well respected cassettezine of the same name. 

After his move to Seattle he ran a music column in the Seattle Rocket also called Sub Pop.

After initial forays into the record label world with a [a=Green River] 7" (not officially on Sub Pop) and the Sub Pop 100 LP, the label exploded onto the indie scene with four influential colored vinyl 7"s which included [a=Mudhoney]'s "Touch Me I'm Sick" which made the year-end top 10 playlist of nearly every music journalist in the world.

Subsequent hyping of the label in the English music press put them on the map, and grunge was born.

'Ghost Of David', the third album by Damien Jurado, is now available on vinyl and cassette for the first time. Originally released September 19th 2000, 'Ghost Of David' has sold over 13,000 copies to date. Damien Jurado is an urban-folk singer with his hand in the baskets of all the right fringe genres. He's a storyteller and the stories have matured steadily since he first appeared on the scene with the perfect balance of light-hearted pop and saddest-of-the-sad on his early singles and first full length, 'Waters Ave S'. Since then (with his second full length, 'Rehearsals For Departure', the 'Gather In Song' EP (both from 1999) and this year's collection of found recordings, 'Postcards And Audio Letters'), he's moved more toward the dark and if you ask him he'll tell you point blank that it's in the dark where you'll find us all. LP format includes a digital download code.
