John Coltrane was an American saxophonist and jazz composer. He was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century, known for his contributions to bebop, hardbop, modal jazz, and free jazz. Coltrane recorded over fifty albums as a leader and collaborated with legendary artists such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. His music evolved to become increasingly spiritual throughout his life. Recognized for his masterful improvisation and iconic centrality to the history of jazz, Coltrane received numerous awards including a posthumous special citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2007.Born on September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA, John Coltrane passed away on July 17, 1967 at the age of forty due to liver cancer. Despite his untimely death, his legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians.Coltrane's musical journey extended beyond himself; he married pianist Alice Coltrane and their son Ravi Coltrane followed in his father's footsteps as a talented saxophonist.

Verve Records, also known as Verve, is a multinational record label that was founded in 1956 by jazz impresario Norman Granz. The label originated from the consolidation of Granz's earlier labels, Norgran Records and Clef Records. In 1960, Verve was sold to MGM Records and became a subsidiary of the company. Throughout the 1960s, Verve expanded its music genres to include comedy, pop, R&B, rock, and folk music.

During this time, Verve had successful jazz recordings from artists such as Stan Getz, Kai Winding, Astrud Gilberto, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jimmy Smith under the direction of Creed Taylor. In 1972, MGM sold its record division to Polydor which brought Verve into the newly formed PolyGram family of record labels. As a result of this transition, Verve focused primarily on jazz reissues while other non-jazz releases were absorbed into Polydor.

In the late 1980s, PolyGram decided to revive Verve with both reissue programs and new artist signings. This revitalization led to strong sales for both new material and remastered classic recordings. With the merger of PolyGram and Vivendi Universal in 1999 creating Universal Music Group (UMG), Verve Records became part of The Verve Music Group alongside other influential labels such as Blue Note Records and Impulse! Records.

Crescent is widely regarded as one of John Coltrane's finest albums, featuring the talents of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. During 1964, John Coltrane spent the least amount of time in the recording studio of his entire career as a leader. It wasn't until April 27th that he, along with Tyner, Garrison and Jones went to the familiar surroundings of Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs studio to record all the tracks that appear on Crescent. In a hint of things to come for the Classic Quartet, both Garrison and Jones are featured on extended solos on the album’s second side.

LP - Verve’s Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from the original analog tapes mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at QPR. The series is supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, and releases are presented in deluxe gatefold tip-on packaging.
