Strangers From The Far East
Rough Trade Albums of the Month - January 2019
This sounds like the dusty soundtrack to a long-forgotten film that has Francois Hardy backed by Davie Allan’s Arrows (or The Shadows with a fuzz fetish if you will) heading off to the distant exotic world of the east.
This is the first album from the band who formed in Bangsaen Beach in Thailand. It’s produced by Go Kurasawa (Kikagaku Moyo) and was recorded in Tokyo in Tsubame Studios. Gob Yutthana plays guitar and sings, Jay Rathchanon sings backing vocals and plays bass, Ohm Chanutpong drums, Peep Sirimit plays keyboard and percussion and Mo Kittinan plays guitar. Uber-tremeloed guitar riddled with the twangy melodies of 1960s style soundtrack-esque party time frat-rock garage style. These are great pop songs with magic sprinkles of Eastern soundtracks, Spaghetti Western’s spacious twang and some grooving yé-yé sounds.
