Nippon Columbia

Founded in 1946, Nippon Columbia is a Japanese record company that has played a significant role in the music industry. Originally known as Nippon Phonograph Co., it later adopted the name Nippon Columbia Co., Ltd. The label owns the rights to the *Columbia* brand in Japan and operates independently from other labels. Over the years, Nippon Columbia has introduced various labels, including *CBS*, and has manufactured and distributed records from Western labels.

In 2002, the company underwent a name change to become *Tri-M Records*, but reverted back to its original name on October 1, 2010. Throughout its history, Nippon Columbia has been known for its distinctive catalog numbering system on CDs. From 1982-1983, catalog numbers were stamped on the plastic outer ring mould of CDs. From 1984-1987, dot matrix font was used for catalog numbers along with specific codes indicating year and month of release.
