Formed in 2006, the band consists of Charlie Fink on vocals and guitar, Doug Fink on drums, Tom Hobden on fiddle, and Urby Whale on bass. Former members Laura Marling and Emmy The Great also performed with the band before pursuing solo careers. The band's name is a combination of their favorite film "The Squid And The Whale" and its director Noah Baumbach.
