Rufus Wainwright

Rufus Wainwright is an American-Canadian singer, songwriter, and composer born on July 22, 1973. He has recorded seven albums of original music and contributed to various compilations and film soundtracks. In addition to his work in popular music, he has written a classical opera and set Shakespeare sonnets to music for a theater piece by Robert Wilson.

Born into a family of folk music legends, Rufus Wainwright's parents are Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle. His sister is the talented singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright, and he also has a half-sister named Lucy Wainwright Roche who is also a singer-songwriter. Raised in Canada, Rufus holds both US and Canadian citizenship.

In 2011, Rufus became a father to Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen with Lorca Cohen. He comes from an impressive musical lineage as the grandson of Loudon Wainwright Jr., and nephew of Sloan Wainwright, Anna McGarrigle, and Jane McGarrigle.
