Tank and the Bangas is a New Orleans-based funk-soul musical group. They gained recognition after winning the 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Contest. The group is led by Tarronia "Tank" Ball, who first made waves as a slam poet. Other members include Joshua Johnson on drums and as musical director, Norman Spence on bass and synth keys, Jonathan Johnson on bass, Merell Burkett and Joe Johnson on keyboards, Anjelika "Jelly" Joseph and Kayla Buggaga on background vocals, Albert Allenbeck on alto saxophone and flute, and Etienne Stoufflet on tenor saxophone.

Verve Records, also known as Verve, is a multinational record label that was founded in 1956 by jazz impresario Norman Granz. The label originated from the consolidation of Granz's earlier labels, Norgran Records and Clef Records. In 1960, Verve was sold to MGM Records and became a subsidiary of the company. Throughout the 1960s, Verve expanded its music genres to include comedy, pop, R&B, rock, and folk music.

During this time, Verve had successful jazz recordings from artists such as Stan Getz, Kai Winding, Astrud Gilberto, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jimmy Smith under the direction of Creed Taylor. In 1972, MGM sold its record division to Polydor which brought Verve into the newly formed PolyGram family of record labels. As a result of this transition, Verve focused primarily on jazz reissues while other non-jazz releases were absorbed into Polydor.

In the late 1980s, PolyGram decided to revive Verve with both reissue programs and new artist signings. This revitalization led to strong sales for both new material and remastered classic recordings. With the merger of PolyGram and Vivendi Universal in 1999 creating Universal Music Group (UMG), Verve Records became part of The Verve Music Group alongside other influential labels such as Blue Note Records and Impulse! Records.

Tank and The Bangas return with their third studio album, Red Balloon, an album born out of a pandemic-ordered break from the band’s rigorous touring schedule. The hiatus gave the band space to breathe and double down on who they areas artists, allowing them to reunite as a more unified group. The new work has evolved and pushed the band to a new level, shedding light on theirunique observations and songwriting reflecting on the ills of America while also celebrating the beauty of black life. “This has been one of the best attempts thus far at capturing what happens when we’re all playing at the same time,” notes the band. “Red Balloon is coming straight for your heart and your neck. It’s going to make you bop and think and love, hopefully, and even love people that look different.” Predominantly produced by Tank and the Bangas, the 16-track album was recorded at Bangaville Studiosin New Orleans and Revival Studios in Los Angeles. Red Balloon also includes contributions from Alex Isley, Masego, Quest love, Lalah Hathaway, Big Freedia, Jacob Collier, Trombone Shorty, The Hamiltones and Wayne Brady.
