Ninja Tune

Ninja Tune is an independent record label based in London, England. Established in 1990 by the duo known as Coldcut, Ninja Tune was created as a platform to release underground music free from the constraints of major labels. Inspired by a visit to Japan, Coldcut sought to pioneer the emerging hip-hop/electro scene of the eighties.

The label's success can be attributed to its constantly growing roster of diverse artists and their innovative approach to music and multimedia. With the combined expertise of Black and More, along with the graphic vision of Openmind and sound business practices, Ninja Tune has become known for producing quality music while providing unparalleled support to its artists.

Notable releases include DJ Food's 'Jazz Brakes' series, which showcased instrumental hip-hop cuts produced by Coldcut. Through their dedication to musical excellence and artist empowerment, Ninja Tune has solidified its position as a leading force in the independent music industry.

J Swinscoe, the founder of The Cinematic Orchestra, began his musical journey in 1990 with a group called Crabladder. After releasing a single on his own label, Power Tool, he gained recognition as a DJ on Heart FM. In 1999, their debut album Motion garnered critical acclaim and led to an invitation to perform at the Director's Guild Awards ceremony for Stanley Kubrick. They were later commissioned to create a live score for Man with a Movie Camera and released it as an album. Their discography also includes Ma Fleur and the soundtrack for The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos. In 2010, they established their independent label Motion Audio.

The Cinematic Orchestra's classic 2007 album Ma Fleur. At the time the album was recognised for its bold departure from the group’s sonic traditions. In the years since, it’s been continuously celebrated, with tracks like ‘To Build A Home’ reaching huge audiences with over half a billion streams to date.

Dealing with themes of loss and love - and in itself representing a kind of absence - Ma Fleur is fertile ground for Swinscoe and long term collaborator Dominic Smith's brand of music-making, for while people rightly have talked about what they do in terms of jazz, the truth is that the basis of their music has always also been in raw emotion. From the achingly beautiful opener "To Build A Home" to the finale, "Time And Space," this is an album which reaches for and finds a truth and honesty far beyond what we would normally expect from such a record, but without losing any of the accessibility which made the band popular in the first place. If the mood is melancholy, The Cinematic Orchestra manage to make it an ultimately uplifting experience, perhaps in the end more about the love you find than the love you lose…
