Wendy Carlos

Composer Wendy Carlos revolutionized electronic music in the late '60s with her groundbreaking album. Born in Pawtucket, RI, on November 14, 1939, Carlos studied composition at Columbia University's Electronic Music Center. She met Dr. Robert Moog and became an early adopter of the Moog synthesizer, contributing to its development. Her debut recording, Switched-On Bach, showcased the synthesizer's capabilities and became a platinum-selling classical record. Carlos continued to innovate with the vocoder and collaborated on film scores for The Shining and Tron.

Carlos was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on November 14th, 1939. After completing her M.A. in composition at Columbia University's prestigious Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center under Vladimir Ussachevsky and Otto Luening she moved to Manhattan where she worked as a recording engineer.

In Manhattan she met Dr Robert Moog and soon began playing his new invention - the Moog Synthesizer - helping him create a touch-sensitive keyboard which allowed players to control pitch by how hard they struck each key rather than by switching between pre-determined pitches using switches or knobs; this innovation made it possible for musicians like Wendy who had been trained classically but wanted to explore new sounds without having to learn entirely different ways of playing their instrument from scratch!
