LUMP was born of good timing and predestined compatibility. It began one night in mid-June 2016, when Mike Lindsay was introduced to Laura Marling after her show supporting Neil Young in London. Upon meeting, Lindsay and Marling discovered they had long been admirers of each other’s work. As luck would have it, Lindsay had been busy for some months composing an intricate, ambitious new sound cycle and needed a vocalist and lyricist for the new work. Recorded in his subterranean London studio, LUMP is the resulting project - sporting a remarkably visual, colourful sound, with a heady blend of wonked-out guitars, Moog synths and pattering drums, set against droning, coiling clouds of flutes and voices.

The album fulfils it's monstrous potential, effortlessly slaloming between haunting dub, lush neo-Soul and glitchy electronica. Global in sound. London in feel. It's like Russell had one big party last February, invited all his friends and recorded the entire thing. Then again, everything is recorded.

3. IDLES - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.roughtrade.com/us/music/idles-joy-as-an-act-of-resistance">Joy As An Act Of Resistance </a>

IDLES may just be the most important band to come out of Britain right now. Cutting through the bullshit of our modern dystopia. Tackling every cancer of this sceptered isle whether it's toxic masculinity on 'Samaritans', nationalism on 'Danny Nedelko' and 'Great', the establishment on 'Gram Rock', aggressive culture on 'Never Fight a Man With a Perm' the list goes on. But with earthquake-like subtlety the guitars swirl and scream, the drums explode and the bass throbs, to remind us that the greatest act of resistance is joy.

4. Khruangbin - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.roughtrade.com/us/music/con-todo-el-mundo">Con Todo El Mundo </a>

It was only a matter of time before the 70s-Thai-funk revivalist movement happened, we all saw this coming a mile off. Wrong. After completely blind siding the entire planet (except for Thailand maybe) in 2015, Khruangbin released their follow-up this year and we can't get enough of this psychedelic trio from, Bangkok *checks notes*, I mean Houston. Utterly atmospheric, furiously funky and an instant "who the hell is that" feeling. Who's looking forward to hearing Justin Bieber's 70s-Thai-funk album due out sometime next year?

Soon our to 10 will be purely devoted to cool Aussie bands, but for now we only have 2. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever's debut is a laid-back landscape painting of living on the Victoria Coast. We at Rough Trade haven't heard a debut album so assured, level-headed and true in many years. Perceptive and satirical lyrics ride the swell of jangly surf-rock in beautiful harmony.

If you haven't heard, South London is where it's at and Goat Girl are another shining example of that. Psych-garage with caustic but sentimental lyrics and bluesy guitars and climactic crescendos. Their debut album kicks you in the shin, slaps you round the face and then gives you a big hug we're totally into it. Janis Joplin would be proud.

Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist, Courtney Barnett, was born on 3 November 1987. She began her music career playing guitar with the grunge band Rapid Transit from 2010 to 2011. Following that, she played guitar and vocals with the psych country band. In 2013, Barnett released her own EP titled 'A Sea of Split Peas', which gained international acclaim. Her first solo album was released in 2015 and was followed by a successful tour of the USA, Europe, and Australasia.

The new album Tell Me How You Really Feel follows her critically acclaimed 2015 debut album <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/music/sometimes-i-sit-and-think-and-sometimes-i-just-sit">Sometimes I Sit And Think And Sometimes I Just Sit</a>, and a recent top 10 collaborative record, <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/music/lotta-sea-lice">Lotta Sea Lice</a>, with <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/kurt-vile">Kurt Vile</a>. One of the most distinctive voices in music, Courtney is known for mixing witty observations with unflinching self-assessment - fast forward to now and although all of the cleaver turns of phrase and an eye for story telling are still there; this new collection of songs see a more serious and outwardly tone capturing the current social landscape yet still retaining moments of intimacy and warmth. As the world becomes more familiar with Courtney Barnett these songs feel comforting and emphatic yet that raw energy and the ability to make the listener think still remain.
