James Carr

James Carr was a renowned rhythm & blues and soul singer, born on June 13, 1942, in Coahoma, Mississippi. With his roots in a Baptist preacher's family, he began his musical journey singing in church and performing in gospel groups. He started recording for Goldwax Records in the mid-1960s while working on an assembly line in Memphis, Tennessee.

Carr made his mark on the R&B charts with hits like "You've Got My Mind Messed Up" in 1966 and his most famous song "The Dark End of the Street," written by Dan Penn and Chips Moman. Despite facing challenges due to bipolar disorder throughout his life, Carr continued to record for Goldwax Records until its closure in 1969.

Although he couldn't replicate the same level of success with subsequent releases, James Carr's impact on soul music remains significant. His powerful vocals and emotionally charged performances captivated audiences during his career. Sadly, he passed away on January 7, 2001, at a nursing home in Memphis due to lung cancer.
