Mississippi Fred Mcdowell

American 'hill country blues' singer and guitarist, Mississippi Fred McDowell, was born on January 12, 1906 in Rossville, Tennessee. He gained recognition after being recorded by Alan Lomax and Shirley Collins during their Southern Journey field-recording trip in 1959. McDowell's field recordings caught the attention of blues enthusiasts and record producers, leading to his career as a professional musician. Renowned for his mastery of slide guitar, he continued to perform in the north Mississippi style throughout his life. McDowell's influence extended beyond traditional blues circles as he coached Bonnie Raitt on slide guitar technique and inspired The Rolling Stones with his song "You Gotta Move." He passed away on July 3, 1972 in Memphis due to cancer.
