Mongo Santamaria

Cuban rumba quinto master and an Afro-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist, Mongo Santamaria was born on 7 April 1917 in Havana, Cuba. With his rhythmic skills and innovative style, he became a renowned figure in the music industry. His talent extended beyond borders as he later settled in Miami, Florida, USA. Sadly, Mongo Santamaria passed away on 1 February 2003 at the age of 85.

Throughout his career, Mongo Santamaria influenced numerous artists with his unique approach to music. Some notable performers who have been inspired by him include Poncho Sanchez, Cachao, Machito, Willie Bobo, Irakere, Eddie Palmieri, Charlie Palmieri, Francisco Aguabella, Ray Barretto, Ruben Gonzalez, Arsenio Rodríguez, Cal Tjader, Noro Morales, Tito Puente, Joe Cuba Sextet, Mon Rivera, Hilton Ruiz, Patato, Paquito D'Rivera and La Lupe.
