Rough Trade Essential

New York Dolls was a band formed in December 1971 and active until early 1975. The initial lineup included Johnny Thunders, Rick Rivets, Arthur Kane, Billy Murcia, and David Johansen. Sylvain Sylvain replaced Rivets in 1972 and the band began playing regularly at the Mercer Arts Center in Lower Manhattan. Despite varying levels of success, they were not widely accepted outside of New York City due to their appearance. Thunders and Nolan left the band in early 1975 while on tour in Florida. The New York Dolls reunited from 2004 to 2011 with Johansen and Sylvain leading a fluid lineup of backing musicians.

Along with the Stooges, the <a href="https://roughtrade.com/search/smart?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;search%5Bterm%5D=New+York+dolls">New York Dolls</a> were largely responsible for pioneering the sound and attitude of punk, and this, their self-titled debut, is one of the founding documents of post-'60s rock.

Outrageous, shambolic, and bursting with energy, the <a href="https://roughtrade.com/search/smart?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;search%5Bterm%5D=New+York+dolls">Dolls</a> borrowed from the amped-up, bluesy swagger of the <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/the-rolling-stones">Rolling Stones</a>, the pop confections of Phil Spector, and the campy theatricality that would flower with the glam movement, yet brought it all together with a visceral impact that recalled the jolt of early rock and roll. They were one of the most important influences on punk - indeed Malcolm McClaren managed them briefly - and spawned Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers who supported the Pistols on the Anarchy tour.
