Reverend Gary Davis

Reverend Gary Davis was an African-American blues and gospel singer, as well as a talented guitarist. Born on April 30, 1896 in Laurens County, SC, USA, he tragically lost his remaining sight at a young age. Despite this setback, Davis taught himself to play the guitar using only his thumb and index finger. His unique multi-voice style allowed him to perform ragtime, traditional tunes, blues, and original compositions in four-part harmony.

Davis gained recognition by frequently performing on the streets of New York near Harlem. He became a well-known figure in the area and even accompanied other notable musicians such as Blind Boy Fuller and Bull City Red on recordings as a second guitarist during the 1930s. However, it is important to note that after becoming ordained as a minister later in life, Davis rarely recorded blues music due to his strong faith.

Reverend Gary Davis's incredible talent has influenced numerous musicians throughout history including Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, Donovan Jorma Kaukonen Ry Cooder David Bromberg Wizz Jones and Blind Boy Fuller.
