The Four Tops

The Four Tops are a U.S. vocal male soul quartet that formed in 1953 in Detroit as The Four Aims. With the original lineup of Lawrence Payton, Levi Stubbs, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, and Abdul "Duke" Fakir, they remained together for over four decades without any changes in personnel. In the 60s, they became the main male vocal group for the signwriting and production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland at Motown. After Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown in 1967, the Four Tops worked with several producers, primarily Frank Wilson.

In 1972, when Motown moved to Los Angeles, California, the Tops stayed in Detroit and signed with ABC Records. They continued to have charting singles into the late-1970s. Since then, they have recorded for various labels including Motown, Casablanca Records, and Arista. The Four Tops were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 as performers.
