At the tail end of the 90’s, against all the advice of older, wiser heads, brothers Ollie and Matt Jacob started the label Memphis Industries. As is often the case, the label was initially intended as a vehicle to release some pals EPs, with no further plans beyond that. Their first signing Blue States delivered the album <i>Nothing Changes Under the Sun</i>, a surprise success for the label, they then rode the original chill wave, before finding that those older wiser heads were pretty spot on about starting a label, and washed up with <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/the-go-team-23286fc4-a92f-4609-a8e7-8a5b8bc7d563">The Go! Team</a> as “definitely their last ever signing before they got proper jobs”. A Mercury Prize nomination, a bucket load of sales and international acclaim later, Memphis went from strength to strength. 2018 sees the label as the home of North-East legends <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/field-music">Field Music</a>, Minneapolis’ future R&amp;B superstars <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/polica">POLICA</a>, the wonderful Wonk-Pop of Dutch Uncles and many more.

Label Focus - Memphis Industries

<p>The Phoenix Foundation is a six-piece band from Wellington, New Zealand. Formed in 1997, they have established themselves as one of the country's most influential and beloved musical acts.</p>
<p>They released their first album through Capital Recordings before moving on to Festival Mushroom Records for their second release. Their third album found a home at Flying Nun Records.</p>
<p>Their fourth album, Buffalo, marked a significant milestone as it was the first release on their own label. Since then, they have continued to captivate audiences with their unique sound and have collaborated with UK indie Memphis Industries for distribution.</p>

An afro-kraut groove with layers of Television-inspired guitars and dreamscapes about the 'money men' controlling the world. 'Playing Dead' nearly didn't make it further than the cutting room floor but was revived thanks to the photographs in a 1950s Time Life essay on the Ona people of Tierra Del Fuego in southern Chile and their ghost rituals. Elsewhere in 'Jason' Luke sings about both the mother of his children and his 'band wife' (Samuel Scott) being struck down with sciatica and being reliant on string painkillers to function, touching on the fear of ageing in the process. Album closer 'Myth' was inspired by the writings of St. Isidore of Seville who in the 19th Century attempted to compile all human knowledge.
