The Leaf Label

A Hawk and A Hacksaw is a musical project led by Jeremy Barnes, former drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel. Based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Barnes creates a playfully gothic atmosphere with his multi-layered, frantic compositions. Mixing field recordings with accordion, piano and bursts of drunken choruses, he generates a singular and unnerving orchestral whole.

Influenced by everything from Eastern European folk music to Pierre Schaeffer to Spike Jones & His City Slickers, A Hawk and A Hacksaw's music defies boundaries. Their songs can take unexpected directions based on the sound of a dog's bark or a phone ringing. Cacophony and sweet hymn-like harmonies coexist in entertainingly unpredictable passages.

Fusing the music of the balkans with american folk, klezmer, roma and turkish music and western pop, A Hawk and A Hacksaw have created something fresh, exciting and exuberant. The album was partly recorded in a remote Romanian village with members of Fanfare Ciocarlia, the gypsy brass band who recently picked up the award for best european artist at the BBC radio 3 world music awards. Beirut's Zach Condon also appears on 'The Way the Wind Blows'.LP - The reissue is limited to 300 copies on 140 Gram white vinyl, most of which went into the Leaf Box Set and is packaged with a CD for the first time. Sleeve artwork is exact repro of original LP release, with the Leaf 20 logo spot varnished on front cover.
