Chris Carter was born in the City of London on 28 January 1953. In 1967, whilst still at school, Carter played bass guitar in a band called The Dragsters. Carter attended Friern Barnet Grammar School between 1964-1966, before moving on to Winchmore Hill County School which he attended until April 1969. 

His first solo gig, under the name Waveforms, took place at Thurrock Technical College on 13 March 1975. He then toured the show around the university and college circuit.  

John Lacey told P-Orridge and Tutti who had formed COUM transmissions about Carter and they were immediately intrigued; he sounded perfect for the group. They arranged a meeting, everything clicked, and from then on Carter became a regular visitor to the studio. And so it was, during the summer of 1975, that the COUM story became complicated by, and intertwined with, the TG.

Shortly after the demise of Throbbing Gristle in 1981 Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni-Tutti formed the Conspiracy International record label CTI (with backing from Rough Trade) and began working together as Chris & Cosey and CTI. Initially releasing only music they soon moved into producing video works, and with the help of Doublevision released a number of CTI experimental video films and soundtracks.

Founded in 1978 by [a=Daniel Miller], Mute (also known as [l36339]) releases various forms of music, with an emphasis on electronic and experimental pop. In May 2002 the label was acquired by the [l=EMI Group]. In 2010 Miller did an agreement with EMI to handle Mute as an independent label again, licensing the trademark from EMI via his company [l=Mute Artists Ltd.], but EMI kept the rights over Mute's back catalogue. After the EMI Group was dissolved, in 2012 [l206061] acquired [l636]'s back catalogue.

Branch offices exist in Germany ([l168349]) and in North America ([l36296]). 

Mute has spawned many regional and special-interest sublabels, some of which are still active. One offshoot, [l=Parallel Series], even became independent of [l636] Mute also operates Mute Bank Mail Order, which sells the label's merchandise directly to consumers. Mute Bank published two issues of [i]Mute Statement[/i], a softcover book that details the entire discography of the label and includes band profiles and photos of release artwork.

Another label strongly associated with Mute is [l=Toast Hawaii], run by [a=Depeche Mode]'s [a=Andrew Fletcher].

Chris Carter from Throbbing Gristle releases a new box set of his early work, collating remastered (and mastered for the first time) solo albums alongside a disc of unreleased archival recordings from 1973-1977. As a founding member of Throbbing Gristle alongside Cosey Fanni Tutti, Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Chris Carter has had a significant role in the development of electronic music - a journey which has continued through his releases as one half of Chris and Cosey and Carter Tutti and a third of Carter Tutti Void - as well as with his own solo and collaborative releases. He is also credited with the invention and production of groundbreaking electronics - from the legendary Gristleizer self-built effects unit through to the Dirty Carter Experimental Sound Generating Instrument and the sold-out TG One Eurorack module (designed with Tiptop Audio, these modules can be heard during Carter’s set at a recent Rough Trade event) and the Future Sound Systems Gristleizer modules - Carter has created the means to make sounds as well as making the sounds themselves.
