Acid Jazz

Acid Jazz is a British label that was established in 1987 by Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson. Although Peterson left in 1989 to form Talkin' Loud, the label continued to thrive under the management of Dean Rudland. The name 'Acid Jazz' was a playful response to the popular 'acid house' movement of the late 80s. Despite its name, Acid Jazz produced records that were not necessarily jazz or acid music, but they quickly became synonymous with 90s style and sophistication. In fact, the term 'acid jazz' began being used to describe any record with a similar vibe. Today, Acid Jazz remains an influential force in the music industry.

Corduroy is a London based 4-piece acid jazz band formed around twins Ben and Scott Addison, previously of Boys Wonder. Richard Searle from Doctor & The Medics and guitarist Simon Nelson-Smith complete the lineup. Corduroy released three albums on Acid Jazz Records in the 90s, with their 1993 album High Havok producing several charting singles in the U.K. Top Ten Independent Charts. They later signed with Big Cat Records before re-signing with Acid Jazz Records in 2018 for their Return Of The Fabric Four LP.

Corduroy’s third album Out Of Here updated their sound, taking in 1970s influences that would later be defined at yacht rock. The Iconic cover with the band about to take off in a bubble-fronted helicopter the album shows the band at the height of their powers. The album features the Top 75 hit Mini, the anthemic tribute to Japanese jazz star Monday Michiru Don’t Wait For Monday and their reverent cover of Motorhead.
