Touch and Go

Don Caballero was an instrumental rock band formed in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1991. They were considered one of the pioneering forces in "math rock", although the members are said to despise that particular term. The band's sound was dominated by the lead drumming of Damon Che and was noted for its odd-timed rhythms and intricate and complex guitar interplay. Also of note was guitarist Ian Williams' guitar-playing, which relied heavily on a finger-tapping approach used for the rhythm playing (there are no solos in Don Caballero's music) and heavy use of a delay pedal. Despite an appearance to the contrary, the group's songs are not improvised jams but are structured works.

The founding members of the group were Damon Che, bassist Pat Morris, and guitarist Mike Banfield, with Ian Williams joining as second guitarist a year later. The group signed to Touch And Go in 1993 for their first LP, "For Respect" and remained with the label for 3 more full-length albums, a couple of singles, and one compilation. Morris left the band after the release of "For Respect". Several bassists rotated in and out of the group, with Matt Jencik appearing on the group's 2nd LP, "Don Caballero 2". Touch And Go Records was started in Lansing, Michigan, by Tesco Vee and Dave Stimson in 1981 as an outgrowth of Touch And Go Zine, a fanzine the duo published. Their intent was to document their local hardcore punk scene.

Necros bassist Corey Rusk hooked up with Tesco to help run the label soon after it started and assumed full control after Vee moved to Washington, DC, in 1983. In 1987, Rusk moved the label to Chicago, Illinois, where the label still resides.

Over the years, Touch And Go has issued records by influential bands like *The Jesus Lizard*, *Slint*, *Shellac*, and *Big Black*. However, in 2008, Rusk announced that the label would be cutting back on its activity and ending its distribution services due to the economic climate of the times.

Now that the rest of the indie-rock world has warmed up to instrumental rock (see the popularity of Tortoise, et al.), Don Caballero reemerges from hiatus with its third full-length, What Burns Never Re-Turns. Staying ahead of the learning curve, the band employs little of the muscle that marked its earlier efforts, instead adopting a more high-brow, abstract approach to its music making. The band is not improvising per se, but creating meticulously arranged, post-Kind Crimson-like songs that attack odd time signatures. Stunning in its acrobatic musicianship, intriguing in its relentless experimentalism, What Burns… is indeed a welcome return.&nbsp;
