John Coltrane was an American saxophonist and jazz composer. He was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century, known for his contributions to bebop, hardbop, modal jazz, and free jazz. Coltrane recorded over fifty albums as a leader and collaborated with legendary artists such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. His music evolved to become increasingly spiritual throughout his life. Recognized for his masterful improvisation and iconic centrality to the history of jazz, Coltrane received numerous awards including a posthumous special citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2007.Born on September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA, John Coltrane passed away on July 17, 1967 at the age of forty due to liver cancer. Atlantic is a renowned US record label that was founded in 1947 by Ahmet Ertegun, Herb Abramson, and Miriam Abramson. Over the years, it has grown into one of the leading companies in the music industry, known for its commitment to artistry and quality. In 1967, Atlantic was purchased by Warner Bros. film studio and operated alongside ATCO Records as separate entities. This is one of the least well-known Coltrane albums, partly because it is an all blues format and partly because it was released at the end of his association with Atlantic records. Plays The Blues features the talents of McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Steve Davis. It is the beginning of his work with Tyner and Jones in quartet form. For that alone this recording would be important. Although this album is called Plays The Blues, this is by no means the only blues which Coltrane plays. There are blues elements, moods and feelings in all of his best-known recordings.
