However, due to the political climate in her home country, she left for the USA in the sixties. In America, she collaborated with renowned artists such as Harry Belafonte and Cannonball Adderley. Letta's captivating voice can also be heard on the soundtrack of the highly successful TV series "Roots". Married to Caiphus Semenya, after 26 years of self-imposed exile, Letta returned to South Africa.

Letta Mbulu was lucky when she emigrated from South Africa, where blacks were troubled and ridiculed by the Apartheid system. She was lucky to rescue a recording deal with A&amp;M records, and even the label's founder, Herb Albert, produced the record, Johnny Mandel did the orchestrations, and Quincy Jones wrote the liner notes. However, it wasn't only luck - Letta Mbulu's talents as a singer are such that they couldn't be overheard. Her husband, Caiphus Semenya, also from South Africa and a musician, helped her throughout. There's Music in the Air from 1976 features songs varying in tempos and moods and languages, and there's a mellow aura of purity and peace, almost innocence, that captures the listener.
