Short for "Subterranean Pop" 

The label was an outgrowth of [a=Bruce Pavitt]'s Olympia, WA based (print) fanzine, which became the well respected cassettezine of the same name. 

After his move to Seattle he ran a music column in the Seattle Rocket also called Sub Pop.

After initial forays into the record label world with a [a=Green River] 7" (not officially on Sub Pop) and the Sub Pop 100 LP, the label exploded onto the indie scene with four influential colored vinyl 7"s which included [a=Mudhoney]'s "Touch Me I'm Sick" which made the year-end top 10 playlist of nearly every music journalist in the world.

Subsequent hyping of the label in the English music press put them on the map, and grunge was born.

The Melvins are a prolific rock/metal band formed in 1983 in Montesano, WA. They have had a rotating cast of more than 10 bass players and have released over 20 studio albums throughout their 40-year career. Their current bassist is Trevor Dunn. The band performs under the name "Melvins Lite" with Trevor Dunn on stand-up bass and under the name "Melvins 1983" with Dale on bass instead of drums.

The core members of the Melvins are Buzz Osborne (guitar/lead vocals) and Dale Crover (drums/vocals). The band was originally based in Montesano, WA before relocating to San Francisco, CA in 1988 and eventually settling in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley.

The name "Melvins" came from a grocery clerk at the Thriftway in Montesano where Buzz Osborne worked. They chose this name as it was an appropriately ridiculous name that referred to the most hated fellow employee at the store.

'​Three Men and a Baby' is the new album by Mike and the Melvins. It was supposed to come out sixteen years ago. These are the facts we can be sure of: in 1998, around the time his band godheadSilo went on hiatus, bassist /v ocalist Mike Kunka busied himself by tagging along on a tour with his friends the Melvins. Somewhere along the way, Mike and the Melvins - King Buzzo (guitar / bass / vocals), Dale Crover (drums / vocals), and Kevin Rutmanis (bass / vocals), at the time - decided to make a record together, and gave the project the imaginative moniker Mike and the Melvins. Sub Pop, ever on the hunt for music's Next Big Thing, enthusiastically agreed to fund and release the super-group's debut, and recording commenced sometime in 1999. Whatever the reasons, the incomplete recording languished on a shelf from 1999 until 2015, when, much to everyone's surprise, the involved parties reconvened, finished the damn thing, and delivered it post-haste to Sub Pop International Headquarters. What a story, right? So, about the record: It's real good! Mike's signature bass crunch and vocals are all over it, and the Melvins are in fine form. It has everything from hefty noise-rock churn to a Public Image Ltd. song to cough-syrup blues to deconstructed black metal. Neither Melvins nor godheadSilo fans will be disappointed, nor will detractors of either; to paraphrase Mike, if you don't like it, it probably wasn't meant for you.
