Formidable Rhythm and Blues (also known as Rhythm And Blues Formidable) was a French series launched by Barclay in 1966. As a distributor for different labels such as Atlantic, Atco, Stax, and others, this label played a significant role in promoting the vibrant genre of rhythm and blues. Over the years, some of these remarkable compilations were reissued through WEA Filipacchi Music in their renowned series.

Tubby Hayes was a British jazz saxophonist, vibraphonist, and composer. He was born on January 30, 1935 in London, UK and sadly passed away on June 8, 1973 at the age of 38. Despite his short life, Hayes remains one of the most influential and respected British jazz musicians of his era.

Hayes' career was marked by both illness and drug usage, which ultimately led to his untimely death. However, his musical legacy lives on through numerous recordings that continue to be released even today.

Known for his unique style and virtuosity on the saxophone and vibraphone, Tubby Hayes has left an indelible mark on the world of jazz. His contributions have inspired countless artists such as *Clifford Jordan*, *Johnny Griffin*, *Harold Land*, *Jackie McLean*, *Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis*, and many more.

That year he'd dazzled American stars, recorded for the legendary Blue Note label and continued to dominate the parochial jazz popularity polls both as the nation's top tenor and co-leader of its best modern combo, the Jazz Couriers. Then at the close of the year he pulled a further rabbit from the hat; a brand new eight piece line-up bringing the crew of the Couriers together with a clutch of new stars including saxophonist Alan Branscombe and trumpeter Stuart Hamer. Issued here for the first time, this PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED recording is taken from a tape reel found among the personal effects of Bix Curtis, 8 resulting in a record – quite literally – of a Tubby Hayes band that existed for one night only. Recorded live at Soho’s legendary Flamingo club, this session captures Hayes and his men in devastating form, playing repertoire the very height of hip.
