Strawberry

Strawberry was a renowned mastering and lacquer cutting studio based in London, UK. Established in May 1978 and operating until 1983, it was founded by Eric Graham and Graham Gouldman of the iconic band 10cc. The studio was a brainchild of their manager Ric Dixon, along with Melvyn Abrahams and David Moores as managing directors. Designed by Tom Hidley, Strawberry boasted state-of-the-art facilities and became one of the most highly regarded mastering studios in the UK.

At Strawberry, records were cut using top-notch equipment including the Neumann VMS 70 lathe with Ortofon CPS cutting control unit and Ortofon cutter head. The expertise of talented engineers like Julian Mills, Melvyn Abrahams, Sean Davies, Steve Rooke, and Jack Adams contributed to the studio's exceptional sound quality. Their dedication ensured that Strawberry stood out as a go-to destination for artists seeking superior mastering services.

In addition to its main name, Strawberry also appeared on releases as "Strawberry Mastering Lounge." It is important not to confuse this label with other studios such as Strawberry Studios South in Dorking or Strawberry Studios France in Hérouville. With its rich history spanning from 1978 to 1983, Strawberry remains an influential player in the music industry during its prime years.

A 4CD collection of the work of songwriter, singer and producer Mike Hurst who worked with internationally renowned stars such as Cat Stevens, Dusty Springfield, The Spencer Davis Group, The Move, Shakin’ Stevens, Cilla Black, Colin Blunstone, PP Arnold, The Nolan Sisters, Chris Farlowe and Showaddywaddy.

A comprehensive tribute to his musical legacy, mixing hits with obscurities, household names with new discoveries, bona fide classics with hidden gems plus his own solo output during the ‘60s and ‘70s with sleevenotes by MOJO magazine’s Lois Wilson boasting fresh quotes from Mike.

From the dawn of the ‘60s through to the mid-‘80s, Mike Hurst was one of British Pop’s most successful all-rounders, enjoying huge success as a songwriter, singer and producer.

Discs one and two focus on Mike’s own recordings charting a string of singles across the ‘60s and ‘70s (many appearing on CD for the first time), including two hits from his time with folk/pop trio The Springfields (also featuring Dusty, of course). With ‘Silver Threads And Golden Needles’, they became the first UK vocal group to breach the US Top 20. The second CD combines two LPs made in quick succession for Capitol at the dawn of the ‘70s.

Discs three and four shine a light on many of Mike’s myriad productions including a string of excellent mod, beat, psychedelic and pop tunes, many of which are now immensely collectable as original 45s – by artists such as The Favourite Sons, Barry St John, The Cymbaline, Truly Smith and Force West.

The discs also include his work with Fancy (originally created by Mike for a US hit cover of ‘Wild Thing’), RAK Records’ act New World, Summer Wine (Mike’s early ‘70s band with Ray Fenwick and Tony Rivers), US Motown legends The Four Tops, teen star Lena Zavaroni, ex-Manfred Mann singer Mike d’Abo, plus Bruce Woolley And The Camera Club’s original version of the Buggles’ hit ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’.
