Charly

Charly Records, also known as Charly, is a British label specializing in reissuing old music from iconic catalogs such as Sun Record Company and Chess. Founded by Jean-Luc Young in France in 1974 and later moved to England in 1975, Charly Records has become a renowned name in the industry.

Throughout its history, Charly Records established various associated companies for licensing and rights, including Charly Records International APS based in Denmark and Charly Holdings Inc. registered in the USA. In the 1990s, they collaborated with Movieplay Portuguesa for CD releases, resulting in the presence of SPA rights society on those releases.

Despite being dissolved in 2001, Charly Records underwent new management and became part of the Snapper Music group. Today, it continues to distribute its reissued music through their extensive network.

During the early 60s, the insatiable appetite in Britain for American rhythm &amp; blues music among a growing coterie of young musicians, modernists and other such hip kids was mostly being ignored by the major record companies.   Enter Guy Stevens, whose crusade to popularise rhythm &amp; blues would shortly encompass not only his stint as DJ at London’s hottest R&amp;B-oriented club, but his pioneering work as consultant to major UK record labels (resulting in big-selling hits), his own record import business, and, icing on the cake, his own record imprint – the legendary Sue label. Those several facets of Guy’s career have inspired the contents of this album – a collection of wondrous black music with a decade- spanning vitality that still excites, is still rivetingly authentic, still heartfelt. Some are now well-known, others so obscure that this is their first-ever reissue on any format – but at the time that Guy introduced them to his audience, all were a revelation.
