David Olney was an American folk/country singer, songwriter, and musician. He was based in Nashville, Tennessee since 1973. Born on March 23, 1948 in Providence, Rhode Island, he had a passion for music from a young age.
Olney's music was influenced by various genres including folk and country. His heartfelt lyrics and soulful melodies resonated with audiences around the world. He gained recognition for his unique storytelling ability and captivating performances.
Tragically, David Olney passed away on January 18, 2020 while doing what he loved most - playing a song onstage at the 30A Songwriter Festival in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. His legacy lives on through his timeless music that continues to inspire both aspiring musicians and devoted fans alike.

Olney writes unique story songs, often with unsparing world view, and can belt 'em out like a man possessed, though he's just as likely to be subtle or funny. Most folks know him as a legendary folk-blues singer songwriter, live performer and recording artist. This 1991 recording has tinges of his 70s rock leanings; his band the X-Rays performed on Austin City Limits, opened for Elvis Costello and the Attractions, and had a substantial following. Following the X-Rays, Olney released a half dozen albums on Philo in the story-telling folk vein that he continues to this day.
