Rough Trade Essential

Neu! was a German krautrock band formed in Düsseldorf in 1971 by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, after their split from Kraftwerk. The group's albums were produced by Conny Plank, who has been regarded as the group's "hidden member". Despite minimal commercial success during its existence, Neu! is retrospectively considered one of the founders of krautrock and a significant influence on a variety of subsequent rock, post-punk, and electronic music artists.

As any musician from Add N to X to <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/sonic-youth">Sonic Youth</a>, from Stereolab to <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/cabaret-voltaire">Cabaret Voltaire</a> could tell you, early '70s Dusseldorf band <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/neu-3bcf65b0-3100-4e5f-8ec8-541dd3d2c4a2">Neu!</a>were one third of the original triumvirate - alongside <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/can">Can</a> and Faust- that defined Krautrock.

Neu! was recorded over four days in Hamburg in 1972 with <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/can">Can</a> producer Conrad Plank, and its static, aggressive harmonies and almost (but not quite) robotic sound still has a resonance that echoes even today.
